Construction on the 23 floats for the Gion Festival’s July 17 parade began today.

Would you believe no nails are used in the float construction. Instead, ropes using traditional tying techniques bind wood timbers together.

Super Typhoon Neoguri has been wreaking havoc in the   southern reaches of Japan. Precautions are taken to protect the floats.

Construction for main parade floats continues July 11, 12 and 13 and the Byobu Matsuri or Screen Festival follows on July 15 and 16.
