Opened in 1903 the zoo has seen better years, but they are attempting to rejuvenate it. Presently, the Kyoto zoo has a program to expose children to endangered species such as gorillas.
In 2008, the zoo and Kyoto University set up the “Cooperation in education and research on conservation of wildlife.” This was established in the hopes of studying the endangered species of gorillas to gain a deeper understanding of their breeding habits and mental development. More recently the zoo has been working with Okazaki Holdings, a one-hundred person committee concerned with the future and well-being of Kyoto City. Together with this committee, the zoo intends to achieve its goal to create a “close and joyful zoo.”
