Tenzan No Yu
Tenzan No Yu
Tenzan no Yu is great for any one traveling on their own to families. It’s a modern-style bath referred to as a Super sento (public bath) but it’s actually an onsen. The “Super” sento name relates to the incredible number of extra facilities available. There is a restaurant, sweets bar, sauna, along with message and spa treatments.
A sento is a public bath usually divided into separate sections for men and women. It uses regular tap water and artificially heats it. People tend to mix up onsen with sento and vice versa. Now, onsen are baths supplied by natural mineral rich water, typically coming straight from the ground.
You can find sento all over Kyoto city but real ONSEN don’t actually exist inside Kyoto city itself. Many sento are small and a little dingy, however they retain a local charm and this is where most of the locals go. For ¥ 410 you can check out most sento around Kyoto.
In Tenzan no Yu’s case, it takes the natural mineral rich water from the ground but its actual temperature is low, making it necessary to artificially heat it to the common 38-41 degrees Celcius of most baths. Therefore, Tenzan no Yu is an onsen.
The mineral rich water in most onsen is one of the most attractive qualities for most onsen goers. The properties are renowned for many health benefits including improving skin, reducing blood pressure and preventing the onset of a number of diseases.
Tenzan no Yu has an Izakaya type restaurant. Izakaya is basically a restaurant and bar mixed into one. Usually they are cheap and serve a broad range of food and drinks, creating a warm, friendly and fun environment. Tenzan no Yu serves both Japanese and Western food along with beer, sake and regular drinks. Especially great for groups and families.
One of the best aspects of Tenzan no Yu is their outdoor bath or rotenburo. Also, the one feature I have yet to see in any other sento or onsen is the Neyu or sleeping bath. It is a slightly inclined bed of rock with warm water streaming down your back once you lie down. Off course outside! There is a cooled slab of rock to rest your head on as well to help keep your body at just the right temperature.
